Shelf mushrooms are commonly called artist's conks. They are an often overlooked canvas but make for a beautiful, rich, sepia toned work of art. Winter months are the best times to harvest them because they are already solid at this time. During the spring and summer the mushrooms' underside is soft and delicate, and care must be taken to get them out of the woods without bruising or damaging it. If left on a shelf in a dry place, they will lose their moisture and dry out permanently, now making them suitable for pyrography (wood burning) artwork.
